Well, I never ever post poetry, and I hardly ever (or have I ever?) post things that I’ve written, partially because I’m scared, but also because I just never feel like anything is ready. Due to the fact that I hope to be publishing a book soon, I decided I need to get over that. Here’s something I wrote a couple of years ago that I was reminded of by a dream I had the other night that was followed up the next day by a very strange chance encounter with an old friend. Thanks for reading!
“Love You Forever”
The beautiful couple stood at the altar
And you stood behind me,
Your hands on my waist,
Your breath at my ear
A little too close for wandering eyes,
But not close enough for me.
They promised to love, they promised to laugh,
And never to part until death takes them.
You whispered and I smiled
More with my heart than anything.
We danced.
You held me close and asked me what song
We would dance to when it was our turn.
You chased me down the hallway,
Daring me to best you at the game.
We were like children playing hide and go seek,
You in your tux and me in my fancy dress.
You had to go before dinner began
And I handed you a snack to take with you,
To keep you comfortable on your journey home.
Every time you left, I felt my heart wrench in two.
Your lips on my hair,
Your soothing words calmed me,
But they were for you just as much.
The rain descended.
My worry began.
You had a long drive.
I ran to the valet before he could hand you the keys.
I was drenched when I reached your car,
And pulled the granola bar from your pocket,
Grateful that you hadn’t yet taken a bite.
“It has peanut butter,” I explained.
He would die.
I couldn’t lose him.
But I knew I was being dramatic.
You laughed.
You gripped my face, wet from the rain
And told me you wouldn’t have eaten it
But only took it because it was my gift.
Tears welled in my eyes
But you couldn’t tell through the rain.
“Love you forever,” you said.
I kissed you and sent you on your way,
Returning to the party alone in a
Drip
Dry
Dress.
